Community Grants 2000-10

Voluntary and community groups in the city are being encouraged to apply for grants for projects that can help improve the quality of life for local people.

Applications for community grants for 2009-2010 open in June. Many groups currently receiving funding will have it continued next year but around £35,000 is still available. There is no upper limit but most grants are expected to be below £5,000.

Groups can apply for grants for a range of activities that will make a real change to the quality of life for local residents. Full details of the programme and application process are on the city council website at www.gloucester.gov.uk/cgfp.  Closing date for applications is July 31st, 2008.

Councillor Kathy Williams, cabinet member for planning and community, commented:

“We are working hard to ensure that the best use is made of this important funding. Gloucester has an exciting and diverse voluntary and community sector and we are looking forward to seeing the applications in the next round.

“A great deal of effort is channelled through local groups and we hope our funding will continue to help people get involved in their communities and build community spirit.”

More information is available to local groups from the community development team on 01452 396980. Email: community.development@gloucester.gov.uk.

Gloucester City Council - Welfare Benefits Take-Up Campaign

The Gloucester City Council's Welfare Benefits Take-Up Campaign has been running for over 6 years, and helps Gloucester City residents claim benefits that they may have been missing out on such as Tax Credits, Housing/Council Tax Benefit and Disability benefits.

The Welfare Benefits Take-Up Campaign helps pensioners and people on low income. It is about increasing income levels in the poorest households and improving quality of life. To date, the campaign has generated a minimum of over £2 million in benefits

Last year the campaign secured a two year funding contract from the Partnership Fund in tackling pension poverty. A Part-Time Welfare Benefit Take-Up Officer has been employed to work with people who are 60 and over to promote benefits such as Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance, Council Tax Benefit and a series of free confidential Benefit Health Checks.

Four support workers have also been recruited to work alongside the Welfare Benefits 60 And Over Take-Up Officer to identify hard to reach groups. These groups are Bangladeshi, African-Caribbean, Indian and Chinese. The support wokers are working within the hard to reach communities, identifying potential clients who may be entitled to benefits and may need help filling out forms.

The Welfare Benefits Take-Up Campaign has a steering group set up which meets every quarter along with various agenices such as CAB (Citizen Advice Bureau), Carers Gloucestershire, Age Concern, Neighbourhood Projects and others to discuss the campaign and share information.

There are also two successful Benefit Advice Surgeries:

Gloucester City Council Offices - Wednesday 10.00am-12.00
The Trust Centre, Conduit St, Gloucester - Thursday 1.30pm-4.00
